Over the centuries, the Philippines has become a melting pot of ancient civilisations with varied locations showcasing everything from the country’s colonial past to its indigenous heritage.

While times have moved on, the Philippines still offers visitors the chance to explore some of the world’s most well-preserved historical sites with each one telling a unique and fascinating story of its own.

1. Visit the walled district of Manila

Nestled among the modern high-rises and busy streets Manila is well-known for, Intramuros (above) is a historic walled district of the city which dates back to the time of the Spanish Empire.

Translating to “inside the walls”, the district is home to several landmarks including Casa Manila – a museum depicting life and living during Spanish colonisation – the Museo de Intramuros, Fort Santiago and the impressive Manila Cathedral (main picture).

The Destileria Limtuaco in Intramuros is also well worth a visit. Dedicated to the historical Limtuaco family distillery, you can taste a variety of liquors and browse fascinating exhibits that tell the story of alcohol production dating back many decades.

There are guided tours available to ensure you experience all the highlights of Intramuros and learn along the way, including bike tours.

2. Take a walk through 2000-year-old rice terraces

The Banaue Rice Terraces are often dubbed the “Eighth Wonder of the World” – carved into the mountains of Banaue, Ifugao, on the northern island of Luzon.

The terraces are said to be around 2,000 years old and some parts have even been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site.

They are all the product of the Ifugao ethnic group, a minority community that has occupied these mountains for thousands of years. It’s estimated that the rice terraces stretch approximately 12,500 kilometres long.

3. Visit an historic Spanish colonial town

Vigan heritage town was established as far back as the 16th century during the Spanish Colonial Era.

Located in Ilocos Sur, Luzon, its cobblestone streets are lined with heritage houses with the architecture reflective of a unique fusion of Spanish and Filipino influences.

During a visit to the town, don’t miss the opportunity to walk along the renowned Calle Crisologo lined with buildings hundreds of years old – now home to thriving shops and restaurants – as well as the Bantay Bell Tower for memorable views of the whole of Vigan.

4. Asia’s largest hilltop Catholic church

First established in 1575, Taal Basilica (above) in Batangas, Luzon, is a ‘larger than life’ historical monument named after the patron saint of Taal, Saint Martin de Tours, whose fiesta is celebrated every November 11.

Perched on a hill and known as the largest Catholic church in Asia, the Basilica’s size and Baroque façade is awe-inspiring for any visitor.

The building’s extraordinary structure is made even more captivating with its dome ceilings hand painted with intricate detail.

Perhaps the most outstanding element is the magnificent altar wall, which is made with shining sterling silver and gold, symbolising the sacred liberation of the tabernacle.

From Taal Basilica, you can also enjoy views of Taal Volcano from the bell tower or explore Taal Heritage Town to see more Spanish Colonial Era buildings.

5. Explore the ruins of a Second World War battlefield

Corregidor Island in Bataan, Luzon, was a critical battlefield during the Second World War and served as the last stronghold for Filipino and American forces.

Today, you can visit the island that has since become an open-air museum of wartime tunnels, ruins, barracks and artillery left from the war.

Highlights of a visit to the island include Malinta Tunnel – a bunker that once housed the President of Quezon – the Pacific War Memorial that pays tribute to fallen soldiers and the huge artillery guns used to defend against enemy advances.
