Five tourists have been killed and another eight injured after a minibus lost control on a winding road in northern Bali.

According to local police, the crash occurred on a steep descent in Buleleng Regency as the vehicle was transporting 13 Chinese tourists from Denpasar.

Witnesses said the driver attempted to avoid a collision with another car by swerving left, but ended up crashing into a tree, veering off the road and plunging into a shallow ravine. The road surface was dry at the time of the accident.

Of the 13 passengers, five later died in hospital from their injuries, while the remaining eight were treated for non-life-threatening wounds. The Indonesian driver survived but was also injured and has since been arrested.

According to media reports, the deceased included three women and two men, aged from their early 50s to mid-60s.

Locals familiar with the area described the stretch of road as notoriously dangerous.
