The United States has become a billion-dollar visitor market for New South Wales, according to new data from Tourism Research Australia.

In the year ending September 2025, NSW welcomed 469,700 visitors from the United States, representing a 4.2 percent increase year-on-year. American travellers spent a combined $1 billion in the state during the period, a 16.1 percent increase compared with the previous year.

The US was also the second largest international visitor market for NSW. The largest group of American travellers visiting the state were aged over 55, accounting for 45 percent of visitors. Couples aged over 45 with no children living at home made up 33 percent of travellers.

On average, visitors from the United States spent $2,134 during their trip.

Australian Bureau of Statistics data shows the market continues to grow. In December 2025, the United States was the largest international source market for visitors to NSW, with 53,270 arrivals compared with 48,060 during the same month in 2024.

Destination NSW CEO Karen Jones said the state is well positioned to attract high-value travellers seeking meaningful experiences.

“The United States is the second biggest global spender on international travel behind China and it’s rewarding to see more visitors discovering NSW’s coastal, dining and cultural highlights. Global tourism is shifting toward deeper experiences, and Sydney and NSW are well placed to offer authentic connections with our lifestyle, food, wine and natural landscapes,” Jones said.

Splendour Tailored Tours CEO Carly Rea said the state continues to attract strong interest from American travellers.

“There is significant pent-up demand for long-haul travel, and NSW is benefiting from increased flight capacity and a favourable exchange rate. Visitors are looking for meaningful experiences, from Sydney Harbour and coastal walks to local food and wine and neighbourhood-based cultural experiences,” Rea said.
