Garuda Indonesia is overhauling its checked baggage policy from September 1, shifting to a piece-based system that significantly increases allowances for passengers across all cabin classes.

Neil Raymond Mills, Garuda Indonesia Director of Transformation, said the change would give passengers greater certainty when planning their journeys.

“Clearer limits on the number and maximum weight of baggage pieces will allow passengers to plan and prepare their baggage more easily, from the initial stages of their journey through to departure,” Mr Mills said.

Under the new policy, international economy class passengers will receive two pieces of up to 23 kilograms each, up from a previous combined allowance of 30 kilograms.

Business and first class passengers on both domestic and international routes will receive two pieces of up to 32 kilograms each, totalling up to 64 kilograms.

On domestic routes, economy class allowances increase from 20 to 23 kilograms, while business class jumps from 30 to 64 kilograms and first class from 40 to 64 kilograms.

In total, some passengers may receive up to 34 kilograms of additional checked baggage compared with the previous policy.

The new policy applies to tickets issued on or after September 1 for travel commencing on or after that date. Passengers with tickets issued before September 1 will retain the allowance stated on their original ticket.
