The Airbus A330 had just left its gate at Orlando International Airport when the fire was spotted, according to media reports in America. Delta Flight 1213 was on its way to Atlanta on Monday morning when the drama occurred.

All 282 people onboard were evacuated down escape slides as emergency services arrived to extinguish the blaze, which was captured on a phone by a passenger in the terminal.

Reports say three people were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

“Delta flight crews followed procedures to evacuate the passenger cabin when flames in the tailpipe of one of the aircraft’s two engines were observed,” the airline said.

“We appreciate our customers’ cooperation and apologise for the experience. Nothing is more important than safety and Delta teams will work to get our customers to their final destinations as soon as possible.”

The Federal Aviation Authority is now investigating the cause of the incident.
