Both Qantas and Jetstar flights have been affected with the airport plunged into darkness.

The blackout began at about 5.20am after a fault with two substations in the domestic terminal caused the entire section of the airport to go dark, triggering delays.

The power outage impacted the check-in area, baggage sorting and the loading of some aircraft, a Brisbane Airport spokesperson told NewsWire.

While power was restored around 6:20am those at the airport told media outlets the scene was “chaotic” and “eerie”.

NRL personality Phil Gould was one of those caught up in the drama, according to a report on news.com.

“Great start to a busy day,” he joked online.

“I wonder if they can take off when the sun comes up? Probably can’t because ticket machines couldn’t work.”

Passengers told 7NEWS there had been no information provided by airport staff while they waited in long lines.

“We thank the passengers for their patience this morning,” said an airport spokesperson.
