A global shift in how the world engages with travel experts is underway – and it’s transforming the way travel advisors work, earn and deliver value.

The World Travel Agents Associations Alliance (WTAAA) has released a global study revealing the rapid adoption of upfront professional fees among travel advisors.

With 95% of New Zealand agencies, 66% across Europe and more than half in the U.S. and Canada now charging consultation fees, the study confirms a growing trend: clients are no longer just booking services – they’re buying expertise.

Key revelations from the study:

# Structured professional fees have boosted profit margins for agencies – from under 5% to as high as 20% in New Zealand.

# 85% of European fee-charging advisors report improved revenue predictability.

# Corporate-focused agencies in South Africa and a rising number of luxury leisure consultants are benefiting from fee-driven models that prioritise expert itinerary design over transactional sales.

Otto de Vries, WTAAA Executive Director, says this paradigm shift elevates travel advisors to the same professional tier as lawyers or financial planners – valued for their knowledge, service and bespoke support, not just point-and-click bookings.

“The future belongs to those who confidently charge what they’re worth, because great advice isn’t free,” he said.

“Today’s travellers want complex itineraries, upfront pricing and 24/7 support and they want advisors who can dedicate their full expertise to creating the perfect trip.

“Professional fees enable advisors to be true consultants, not just instruction-takers.”

While initial client resistance emerged in some markets (70% reported pushback), agencies succeeding with fee implementation focused on clear value communication.

“This marks a new chapter for our industry,” added de Vries. “We are witnessing a structural transformation where advisors around the world are no longer defined by what they book but by what they know.

“They’re increasingly being compensated like true professionals, which ultimately delivers more value to travellers through personalised planning, transparency and trust.”

The comprehensive white paper includes detailed regional breakdowns, implementation strategies and practical recommendations for agencies considering fee adoption, representing the most comprehensive global analysis of professional fee trends in the travel industry.
