A special event was held in Sydney yesterday, entitled Lanna Legacy: A Journey to Northern Thailand. Thai Tourism is keen to encourage visitors to get out and explore more of the country, apart from the popular hotspots.

Mr Naruchai Ninnad, Consul-General of Thailand in Sydney (above), said the event was part of a broader effort to encourage Australians to enjoy the rich cultural and culinary heritage of northern Thailand.

“As we look forward to the coming year, the Tourism Authority of Thailand is bringing us onto a new path under the theme ‘Unforgettable Experiences’,” he said.

“This campaign aims at making every journey to Thailand not only enjoyable, but also deeply meaningful, enriching and full of memories.

“Not only is Thailand widely known as the land of smiles, but Thailand is also a land of recovery, where people can regain peace, restore spiritual balance and rediscover the purpose of life.

“Today’s event shines a spotlight on northern Thailand, particularly the spectacular province of Chiang Mai and its neighbouring areas, which are rich in heritage, culture, diversity and culinary distinctiveness.”

Mr Ninnad added that in conjunction with TAT they were hoping to spotlight a region that remained “relatively unrepresented on the global stage”.

“The north offers more than just scenic beauty, but a journey of healing, of reflection and of meaningful encounters.

“From its peaceful mountains and spiritual traditions to its warm hearted people, the north remains a region where visitors can truly rejuvenate.”

Mr Pichaya Saisaengchan, Director of Tourism Authority of Thailand Oceania, said he wanted visitors to explore beyond the southern beaches and tropical islands of Phuket.

“It is now the time to step further into the north, into the land of big mountains, green forests and stunning waterfalls, sample tradition and unique cultures, and most of all, enjoy meeting warm and hospitable people.”
