Hot on the heels of Cruise360, CLIA and Big Splash Media have launched the latest edition of New Wave, the annual sustainability magazine that showcases the cruise industry’s progress towards a greener future.

The 2025 edition highlights how cruise lines worldwide are investing heavily in cleaner technologies and new ships designed to cut emissions, with an overarching goal of achieving net-zero. Alongside environmental innovation, the magazine also looks at the social and economic contributions cruise tourism is delivering to communities around the globe.

This year, food and produce take centre stage, with stories on sustainable sourcing in on-board dining, as well as the cultural traditions shared through regional cuisine and native ingredients. Expedition travellers will also find features on citizen science projects at sea, where passengers can contribute to vital research and environmental education while visiting some of the world’s most remote regions.

CLIA Managing Director Australasia Joel Katz said sustainability remained the industry’s number one focus.

“Cruise lines globally are investing billions of dollars in new ships and new technologies to reduce emissions and achieve their environmental goals,” Katz said. “At the same time, they are mounting initiatives in communities all over the world to help bring positive benefits and ensure lasting economic impacts from cruise tourism. New Wave helps demonstrate many of these projects in a bright and accessible style.”

Now in its fifth year in Australasia, the magazine outlines advances such as alternative fuels, new sources of clean energy and initiatives to protect marine environments. It also features a Q&A with CLIA President & CEO Bud Darr on how the cruise sector is working with the wider maritime community to reach net-zero.

Beyond ocean cruising, the magazine shines a light on river cruise lines and their partnerships with communities along inland waterways, as well as projects supporting wildlife protection, community development and habitat rehabilitation.

Produced by Big Splash Media, the new edition will be distributed with Cruise & Travel magazine and shared with CLIA member travel agents and industry stakeholders. It is also available to view online.
