Elements of Byron is marking a decade of operation — and telling one of Australian luxury travel’s standout loyalty stories.
Since opening on 50 acres of dunes and rainforest on Belongil Beach in 2016, the Byron Bay resort has built a devoted following. Around 20 per cent of guests return for multiple stays, three per cent have visited five times or more, and one couple has checked in more than 30 times. Many request the same villa each year, turning their stay into a family tradition.
Over the past 10 years, the property has grown from a team of 120 to as many as 260 staff seasonally, with a strong focus on long-term career development. Less than four per cent of the site is built on, more than half the estate is permanently conservation-zoned, and the ownership group has contributed $5.5 million to local charities — reinforcing its deep ties to the region.
The evolution of the onsite Osprey Spa also reflects shifting luxury trends, moving towards immersive, restorative treatments designed to support nervous-system wellbeing rather than traditional indulgence.
General Manager Michael Skinner attributes the resort’s staying power to what he calls a “fifth element”: human connection — the reason guests return year after year, and why this 10-year milestone feels more like the beginning of a legacy than a celebration of the past.
