The Australian travel industry is mourning the loss of one of its most visionary pioneers, Geoff McGeary OAM, who passed away on June 18, aged 83.

As the founder of the APT Travel Group, Geoff helped shape the way Australians travel – at home and abroad – over a remarkable career spanning more than six decades.

What began as a single-family-run bus service in suburban Melbourne grew under Geoff’s leadership into an international touring powerhouse, offering unforgettable experiences across more than 70 countries.

Geoff’s contribution to tourism was transformative. From launching adventurous camping trips to Central Australia in the 1960s to introducing luxury river cruising to Australian travellers, his ability to anticipate and respond to shifting travel trends was unmatched.

APT’s signature blend of comfort, innovation and immersive experience has long set a benchmark for the industry.

Brett Jardine, Managing Director of the Council of Australian Tour Operators (CATO), paid tribute to Geoff’s enduring influence.

“It is with deep sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Geoff McGeary OAM – a true pioneer of Australian tourism and a towering figure within our industry for more than six decades,” he said.

“Geoff’s innovation, tenacity and deep commitment to quality and customer experience helped define the modern Australian touring landscape.”

Geoff was recognised formally in 2014 with the Medal of the Order of Australia for his service to tourism and in 2015 was named an Australian Tourism Legend at the Qantas Australian Tourism Awards.

But to those who knew him, Geoff was more than an award-winning entrepreneur – he was a hands-on leader, a mentor to many and a humble figure who never lost sight of the joy travel can bring.

Geoff is survived by his children, Rob McGeary and Lou Tandy, who now lead the APT Travel Group. Together, they continue his legacy with the same spirit of adventure and excellence that defined their father’s life and work.

Geoff McGeary OAM leaves behind not only a global business empire but a legacy of shaping dreams, creating memories and opening the world to generations of travellers.
