Air New Zealand has unveiled its long-awaited new uniform collection, marking a striking new era not only in style but in sustainability.

Worn by more than 6,000 team members around the globe, the collection blends contemporary design with deep cultural storytelling and a clear commitment to a greener future.

Designed by internationally acclaimed fashion designer Emilia Wickstead, the new uniform features bespoke prints by renowned tā moko artist Te Rangitu Netana.

Together, they have created a collection that goes far beyond fashion – it tells a story of Aotearoa, one thread at a time.

A Design That Tells A Story

From the symbolic kōwhai print adorning ‘The Fine Print – Dress’ to the purapura whetū patterns on ‘The Collective Thread – Shirt’, each piece in the collection has been carefully curated to reflect the landscape, heritage and people of New Zealand.

Netana’s prints capture the essence of the land and sea, woven into garments that will be seen by travellers around the world.

“Each print is a story, deeply rooted in the traditions and values of Aotearoa,” says Netana. “I’m proud that these designs have found a place in Air New Zealand’s uniform, bringing te ao Māori to designs that show up all over the world.”

Wickstead, who called the project a “passion piece”, said she wanted to create garments that empowered wearers and told a meaningful story.

“It was essential to me that this uniform tells a meaningful story about Aotearoa,” she said. “I believe this uniform will evoke a sense of pride and occasion.”

Stepping Forward Sustainably

Air New Zealand’s new uniform doesn’t just look to the past for inspiration – it looks ahead to a more sustainable future.

The collection features a variety of eco-friendly materials including recycled polyester, organic cotton, and responsibly sourced wool.

Some of the key sustainability features include:

  • Men’s shirts made with sustainable organic cotton in place of virgin cotton.
  • Women’s dresses and blouses crafted from recycled polyester to reduce environmental impact.
  • Suiting fabric made from a blend of recycled polyester and wool.
  • Pilot shirts to include blends of recycled polyester and organic cotton.
  • Merino wool knitwear offering both luxury and low impact.

The airline is also taking proactive steps to address the end-of-life of uniforms, exploring ways to recycle existing garments and develop sustainable disposal solutions for the new collection.

A New Look for A New Era

Beyond materials and design, inclusivity and identity are at the heart of the new look. A standout piece, the Ie Faitaga, is being trialled by Pasifika team members as part of the airline’s commitment to cultural representation.

A bold pinstriped pilot suit lined with Kiwi feather fabric adds another layer of symbolism, celebrating leadership and mana.

Air New Zealand CEO Greg Foran summed it up: “This is more than just a uniform; it is a celebration of our people, our culture and our values.”

What’s Next?

Following its official reveal, the new uniform will undergo wearer trials beginning next month.

After feedback and final refinements, the full rollout will take place in 2026, dressing the Air New Zealand team in a collection that honours the past, embraces the future and represents the very best of Aotearoa.
