AmaWaterways has officially christened AmaMagdalena, the first-ever luxury river cruise ship to sail Colombia’s legendary Magdalena River, marking a major milestone for both the company and the region’s burgeoning tourism industry.
The celebration took place on June 17 in the UNESCO-listed city of Mompox and attracted government officials from across Colombia, including the Governor of the Bolívar Department, the Mayor of Mompox, and national representatives from the Ministries of Tourism, Transport, and Defence.
Their presence highlighted the years of collaboration between AmaWaterways and Colombian authorities to bring this pioneering project to life. Locals lined the riverbanks to witness the ceremony, underscoring its cultural significance.
“AmaMagdalena represents years of collaboration, vision and trust between our team and our Colombian partners,” said Rudi Schreiner, Co-Founder and CEO of AmaWaterways.
“By opening the Magdalena River to luxury river cruising, we are laying the foundation for sustainable tourism that will benefit travellers and local communities alike for generations to come.”
Designed to carry just 60 guests, AmaMagdalena was created in close partnership with Colombian artisans.
Its interiors blend modern luxury with local artistry, including handcrafted woodwork by Cartagena-based Ocean Projects and elegant furnishings from Casa Schlegel Donado.
Amenities on board include a Sun Deck pool, a fitness room and two dining venues – the Main Restaurant and the al fresco Bolívar Restaurant – both featuring a mix of Latin American and Western dishes.
The ship’s godmother is Marianna Schlegel Donado, a celebrated Colombian designer and entrepreneur who helped bring a local touch to the ship’s interior styling.
“This ship carries the soul of our country: its colours, its craftsmanship, its warmth,” she said. “Seeing it sail the Magdalena River fills me with pride.”
AmaMagdalena sails two distinct seven-night itineraries – Magic of Colombia and Wonders of Colombia -travelling between Cartagena and Barranquilla.
Shore excursions range from cultural performances and Carnival celebrations to birdwatching and visits to Palenque, the first free town in the Americas. Optional pre- and post-cruise land packages are available in Medellín, Cartagena and Panama City.
ProColombia president Carmen Caballero praised the launch as a landmark in Colombia’s tourism story. “AmaMagdalena embodies what Colombia stands for: a vibrant, authentic destination filled with natural and cultural beauty,” she said.
A second ship, AmaMelodia, is set to join the Magdalena River fleet later this year, reinforcing AmaWaterways’ commitment to Colombia and to sustainable, high-end tourism experiences.
