A major leadership change is underway at Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH), with President and CEO Harry Sommer stepping down effective immediately.

Sommer departs the top role less than three years after being appointed in July 2023, when he succeeded longtime industry leader Frank Del Rio following his retirement. Sommer had previously served as president and CEO of the company’s flagship brand before moving up to lead the parent organisation, marking a decades-long career with the Norwegian business.

Taking the helm with immediate effect is board director John W. Chidsey, a seasoned executive widely recognised for his five-year tenure as CEO of Subway. Chidsey rejoined the NCLH board in February 2025, having previously served from 2013 to 2022.

Sommer’s departure marks the second high-profile leadership change at NCLH in under 12 months. In August 2025, David Herrera stepped down as president of the Norwegian Cruise Line brand.

In a statement, the board thanked Sommer for his many years of dedication and service, acknowledging his long-standing contribution to the company’s growth and development.

In his first remarks as the new president and CEO, Chidsey emphasised operational focus and disciplined execution. He highlighted the strength of the company’s award-winning brands, experienced teams and loyal guests, noting that his immediate priority will be partnering with the board and management to sharpen performance while continuing to deliver high-quality holiday experiences.
