The airline issued a statement to customers yesterday, informing them of a “data security incident” relating to an online customer care platform operated by a global technology corporation.
“According to information from the partner, Vietnam Airlines is one of many businesses in the world using the services of this unit that were affected. Part of the customer data processed on this platform may have been accessed illegally,” the statement said.
“Immediately after receiving the warning, Vietnam Airlines quickly coordinated with authorities, cybersecurity experts and technology partners to investigate the incident, assess the scope of impact and strengthen data protection measures.”
The statement went on to say that some personal information may have been exposed, including full names, email addresses, phone numbers, dates of birth and Lotusmiles membership numbers.
The airline assured customers that sensitive data such as credit cards, payment information, passwords, itineraries, passports and Lotusmiles account balances remained secure and unaffected. The airline’s internal IT systems are operating normally.
“To protect personal information, Vietnam Airlines recommends that you change your Lotusmiles account passwords and associated emails, be alert to fake scams, suspicious emails or calls impersonating Vietnam Airlines, and not share personal information or OTP codes, and not log in to unauthenticated systems,” the statement added.
“Vietnam Airlines sincerely apologises for this incident and any concerns it may have caused to customers. The airline will continue to update information and take all necessary measures to enhance data security and maintain passenger confidence.”
