Officers from the Bali Transportation Agency conducted surprise spot checks in Badung Regency – home to tourist hotspots including Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu and Nusa Dua -ticketing 20 vehicles on the first day alone.
Most violations involved taxis and private cars illegally ferrying tourists without the correct permits.
Some 10 vehicles were unlicensed, six had expired registrations and four breached goods transport rules. Drivers were fined but allowed to continue their trips.
Agency official Nyoman Sunarya said checks will continue for at least a month to “ensure safety, security and order” on Bali’s roads.
The crackdown comes as South Kuta police step up visits to taxi ranks, urging drivers to maintain professionalism and avoid clashes between traditional and online taxis.
Police warned that any trouble involving tourists will be dealt with swiftly to protect the island’s reputation.
