The tremor struck just before 10pm local time, with its epicentre located 17 kilometres off the coast of Cebu City, located in the Visayas region.

The local San Remigio municipality declared a “state of calamity” as a result of what it described as “widespread damage and disruption”.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology issued a tsunami warning but has since cancelled the alarm, warning residents to remain vigilant.

Authorities continue to monitor aftershocks – more than 280 have been recorded so far. The Philippines lies in the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, where volcanic activity and earthquakes are common.
