The earthquake hit about 136 kilometres from Kamchatska at a depth of 19 kilometres, according to the United States Geological Survey.
An alert has now been issued for Hawaii, Japan, Guam, Micronesia, California and portions of Alaska’s Aleutian Islands.
Kamchatka is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire but is a remote area of the country which is scarcely populated.
The Russian quake follows a similar incident recorded in Western Australia this morning, which measured 4.8.
It happened about 180km east of Perth in the Wheatbelt region, just after 2am (AWST).
No damage or injuries were reported but residents throughout the state’s south-west felt the quake, including those in Perth and Kalgoorlie.
