Australian travellers will be among the first in the world to experience a new raft of major customer-focused improvements from Delta Air Lines.

Unveiled at a media briefing in Sydney, the $US1 billion fleet-wide investment represents the airline’s largest expenditure and holistic redesign in 30 years.

The carrier’s upgrade program includes network expansion, seamless baggage transfer, improved Wi-Fi connection and the next era of Delta One.

“Delta’s fully reimagined experience is rooted in solving real customer needs and desires, with intentionality behind every detail,” said Ranjan Goswami, Delta’s Chief Marketing and Product Officer.

“Every investment we make is deliberate and designed to deliver the industry’s most premium end-to-end travel experience.”

Described as a “game-changer”, Delta has introduced seamless baggage transfer for connections going through Los Angeles from Sydney.

This allows checked baggage to be screened prior to arrival in the U.S., eliminating the need for customers to collect and recheck bags during connections.

The new system was introduced on October 13 and is set to save Aussie travellers at least 25 minutes in their transit time. Sydney is currently one of only four locations on Delta’s international network that offers this service.

“It was the worst 25 minutes of anyone’s flight experience – it was just horrible. It’s taken us years to get to this point where we can eliminate that process,” said Jeff Moomaw, Delta’s Vice President – Asia Pacific (main image).

“Delta is focused on removing friction from the travel experience so customers can spend less time navigating the airport and more time enjoying their journey.”

Mr Moomaw also revealed that Delta Sync fast free Wi-Fi is now available across the entire world following a rollout across the Pacific region last weekend.

“Two of the first markets to receive the new service are Melbourne and Sydney and over the next couple of weeks every Delta flight across the Pacific will have this operational,” he added.

“That makes Delta the first airline on a global basis to be able to offer fast free Wi-Fi connectivity, which is really cool.”

The other major announcement concerned Delta One, the airline’s flagship long‑haul business class cabin.

New product elevating the dining and hospitality experience will be rolling out on Delta’s A350-1000 aircraft, which are expected to enter service late next year.

“It’s all really exciting, but who wants to wait until 2027 or later to get this product? We’re very excited to announce that the new Delta One service will start to roll out across our company starting in October this year.

“It is starting in Los Angeles and one of the first markets to have this new service will be Auckland (Oct 24) followed two days later by Brisbane and then Sydney and Melbourne on November 3.”
