Asia Pacific is expected to be one of the fastest growing regions for air travel demand over the next 25 years.

That was one of the key findings when the International Air Transport Association released its Long Term Demand Projections for air travel.

The report also showed that global air passenger demand is expected to more than double by 2050.

Under the central forecast, demand is projected to reach 20.8 trillion revenue passenger kilometres, up from nine trillion in 2024, reflecting an annual growth rate of 3.1 per cent.

Emerging markets drive long term expansion

Growth will be uneven across regions, with Asia Pacific and Africa leading at 3.8 per cent and 3.6 per cent respectively, while Europe and North America are expected to grow at a slower pace.

The fastest growing markets include intra Africa, Africa to Asia Pacific and intra Asia Pacific routes, highlighting the increasing importance of developing regions in shaping global aviation demand.

These trends reflect broader shifts in population growth, economic development and improving connectivity across emerging markets.

Demand remains strong despite structural changes

While demand continues to grow, the report notes a gradual slowdown in growth rates compared to previous decades.

Average annual growth has declined from 6.1 per cent between 1972 and 1998 to a projected 3.1 per cent through to 2050, reflecting market maturity rather than weakening demand.

The report also highlights a lasting structural impact from the COVID 19 pandemic, with demand not expected to fully return to its previous trajectory.

Industry urged to prepare for future growth

Willie Walsh, Director General, IATA, said the long term outlook remains positive.

“People want to travel and, under all scenarios, demand is expected to more than double by mid century. This creates opportunities for economic and social development while reinforcing the need for efficient infrastructure and a successful energy transition,” he said.

The findings underline the importance of long term planning across infrastructure, policy and sustainability, as the aviation sector prepares for continued global growth.
