Demonstrators have taken to the streets across Europe over the weekend to demand a curb on mass tourism.
Protests were held in Spain, Italy and Portugal, with crowds in Barcelona urged to spray water pistols at visiting tourists.
Hotel staff in the city were forced to confront protestors when an orange flare was reportedly thrown into the reception area after they had surrounded the property.
The activists shouted “Tourists Go Home” and “One More Tourist, One Less Local”, as well as “This tourism is terrorism.”, according to a report on MSN News.
Police stepped in to stop them reaching the city’s famous Sagrada Familia and avoid clashes between the demonstrators and tourists visiting the Gaudi landmark.
Locals claim that tourism is forcing up the price of housing, raising the cost of living and preventing them from living in their own cities.
Anti-mass tourism demonstrations took place in other Spanish cities, including Granada, Palma and Ibiza.
Protests were also seen in the Portuguese capital Lisbon, as well as in Italian hotspots Venice, Genova, Palermo, Milan and Naples, according to announcements issued by several of the organising groups.
