Eurostar has announced a major expansion of its cross-border train services, with plans to launch direct routes from London to Frankfurt and Geneva by the early 2030s. The move is part of a £1.7 billion investment, including the introduction of 50 new trains designed to transform European rail travel.

Currently, Eurostar links London with Paris, Brussels, and Amsterdam, but this expansion will bring two major European destinations within easy reach by rail. Travellers can expect journey times of approximately five hours to Frankfurt and five hours and twenty minutes to Geneva, rivalling the convenience of short-haul flights.

The initiative is a significant boost for sustainable travel across Europe. As demand for low-carbon transport grows, direct train services offer an attractive alternative to flying, aligning with broader environmental goals.

Eurostar’s move also strengthens the operator’s position in the competitive European market, particularly as airlines like Ryanair and easyJet dominate the short-haul air travel sector. With these new routes, Eurostar aims to capture the attention of both leisure and business travellers seeking a more comfortable, city-centre to city-centre experience.

The service expansion is expected to enhance connectivity across Europe, making it easier for Australian travellers to explore Germany and Switzerland by rail once they arrive in London. For agents, it’s a timely opportunity to highlight rail itineraries in Europe as part of greener travel options.

Eurostar’s plans are still in the early stages, with exact launch dates yet to be confirmed, but the commitment signals an exciting future for train travel in Europe.
