Australians keen to make every day of annual leave count have plenty to work with in 2027, with a public holiday calendar that rewards careful planning.
Research by travel insurance provider Insure&Go’ reveals that the smartest savers could turn as few as three days of annual leave into a 10-day summer holiday, with further opportunities to stack long breaks at Easter, Anzac Day and beyond.
Christmas and New Year
The festive season delivers the best annual leave hack of the year.
Workers need to book just three days of annual leave – Tuesday 29 to Thursday December 31 – to enjoy a 10-day break from December 25 through to January 3.
Those wanting the full summer escape can add four more leave days from Monday 21 to Thursday December 24, stretching the break to 16 days from Saturday December 19 for a total of seven days of leave.
Australia Day
Workers who take four leave days across the week – Monday 25 and Wednesday 27 to Friday January 29 – can unlock a nine-day summer break from Saturday 23 to Sunday January 31.
Easter
Easter arrives early in 2027, with Good Friday on March 26 and Easter Monday on March 29.
Taking four days of leave from Tuesday March 30 to Friday April 2 converts the long weekend into a 10-day break from March 26 to Sunday April 4.
Tasmanian public-service employees, who also receive Easter Tuesday as a public holiday, need just three days of leave to achieve the same escape.
Anzac Day double-header
Workers in the ACT, New South Wales, Queensland, the Northern Territory and Western Australia receive a substitute public holiday on Monday April 26.
Four days of leave from Tuesday 27 to Friday April 30 opens a nine-day break from Saturday April 24 to Sunday May 2.
Queenslanders and Territorians fare even better: with Labour Day and May Day falling on Monday May 3, the same four days of leave delivers a 10-day break through to May 3.
Nine-day mid-year and spring breaks
The King’s Birthday on Monday June 14 in most states – observed on September 27 in Western Australia and October 4 in Queensland – offers the classic long-weekend extension: four days of leave turns any of these into a nine-day break.
Labour Day on Monday October 4 in New South Wales, the ACT and South Australia creates the same spring opportunity, while state-based holidays across March and May offer further chances to step away for longer.
A bonus for the 2027 festive season
The year ends with another gift. Christmas Day and Boxing Day 2027 fall on a Saturday and Sunday, triggering substitute public holidays on Monday 27 and Tuesday December 28 in most states.
Just three days of leave from Wednesday 29 to Friday December 31 secures at least a nine-day break from December 25 to Sunday January 2, 2028 – stretching to 10 days where New Year’s Day, which falls on a Saturday, is observed on Monday January 3.
