Vietnam is emerging as one of the fastest-rising destinations for young people looking to work, travel and live abroad, with searches for flights to Vietnam up 350 per cent year on year.

Global Work and Travel analysed Google data and found searches for flights to Vietnam reached 462,000 in the past month, driven by growing interest in teaching English abroad, remote working and lower-cost long-stay travel.

Jürgen Himmelmann, Global Work and Travel co-founder, said Vietnam was increasingly sitting in a sweet spot that traditional working holiday destinations could not match for cost-conscious young travellers.

“Australia has long been one of the classic routes for young people looking to work and travel abroad, but we are now seeing a shift in how travellers think about that first big move overseas,” Mr Himmelmann said.

“For graduates, remote workers, career changers and people in their 20’s who feel priced out of the usual paths, the idea of earning while living somewhere like Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City or Hoi An is becoming much more appealing.”

Mr Himmelmann said the shift was not just about cheaper flights or viral travel content, but a broader recalculation of where money goes further and where real job demand exists.

Vietnam’s appeal sits at the crossroads of several major travel trends – teaching abroad, remote working, lower-cost city living and longer-term Southeast Asia travel.

However, Global Work and Travel is warning travellers not to rely on social media advice alone when planning a move.

“The biggest mistake is assuming that because Vietnam looks affordable and accessible online, the admin will be simple. Visa rules, work permissions, TEFL requirements, healthcare, banking and insurance all need to be checked properly before someone makes the move,” Mr Himmelmann said.
