Japan’s upcoming ski season is shaping up to be a dream for powder lovers.

With La Niña conditions predicted for the northern hemisphere, heavier than usual snowfall is on the horizon, a welcome forecast for Aussie travellers who already rank Japan among their top international winter destinations.

From Hokkaido’s famed powder fields to the scenic slopes of Nagano, Japan continues to entice skiers and snowboarders with its world-class terrain, rich culture and unbeatable après ski and onsen experiences.

This season, new openings from IHG Hotels & Resorts in major snow destinations including Sapporo, Appi Kogen and Karuizawa make it the perfect time to plan your ultimate alpine escape.

When to Go: Japan’s Snow Season at a Glance

  • Mid November – Mid December: Early season with fewer crowds and lower prices
  • January – February: Peak powder months, the most consistent conditions but also the busiest
  • Late February – Early March: Great snow with smaller crowds and better deals
  • March – April (sometimes into May in Hokkaido): Late season, less reliable snow, perfect for travellers prioritising après and exploration

SAPPORO, HOKKAIDO

InterContinental Sapporo – Opened 1 October

Hokkaido’s first international luxury hotel has arrived. The brand new InterContinental Sapporo brings five star sophistication to the heart of Japan’s snow capital.
