Low-cost carrier Jetstar is marking its 21st birthday with a quirky and crowd-pleasing celebration: a live-action medieval duel that could land one lucky Aussie with $50,000 worth of free flights.

Dubbed Knight of the Skies, the campaign pays homage to the traditional age of knighthood in medieval England—21—by inviting Australians to take part in a real-life fantasy battle. The contest culminates in a large-scale live action role-play (LARP) event in Melbourne on 25 May.

LARP, short for Live Action Role-Playing, is a form of interactive storytelling where participants physically act out their characters' actions, often in costume and within elaborate narratives. In this case, the storyline is a tongue-in-cheek medieval tournament, backed by Swordcraft—Australia’s largest LARP organisation, which has been growing steadily for over 30 years.

To enter, Australians must post a photo of themselves in a homemade medieval costume to Instagram or Facebook, tagging Jetstar. Imagination is key, with Jetstar encouraging everyday items—like frying pans for helmets or feather dusters as swords—to take centre stage in these DIY getups.

Eight finalists will be chosen to participate in the Melbourne event, battling it out in foam weaponry and medieval garb under the guidance of seasoned LARPers. Comedian and radio personality Liam Stapleton will host and take part in the duel.

The winner will walk away with $50,000 in Jetstar flight vouchers, while the other contestants each receive $1,000 worth of flights.

As well as celebrating its milestone, Jetstar’s campaign shines a spotlight on the vibrant and inclusive Australian LARP community. The initiative blends fantasy and flight in a fresh and creative way that’s bound to generate buzz—and maybe a few bruises.
