One of Australia’s most extraordinary natural events is about to unfold, and Outback Spirit wants to make sure you have a front-row seat.
Record-breaking rainfall across Australia’s interior is flowing toward South Australia, with experts predicting Kati Thanda–Lake Eyre could reach full capacity for the first time in decades. If forecasts hold, it will be only the fourth time in 160 years of recorded history that the country’s largest salt lake has filled to capacity, making 2026 a truly once-in-a-generation event.
Alicia Triggs, Journey Beyond Executive General Manager Sales and Partnerships, said the conditions were already exceeding expectations.
“Lake Eyre is always unpredictable — you never truly know when it will be a flooding year. We were fortunate last year to witness fantastic water levels, and 2026 is already proving even more remarkable,” she said.
To mark the occasion, Outback Spirit has launched a brand new seven-day Kati Thanda–Lake Eyre and Flinders Ranges itinerary, travelling from Adelaide and back aboard a five-star all-terrain Mercedes-Benz coach. The all-inclusive small-group journey is capped at 26 guests and combines remote outback exploration, two scenic flights over the lake and surrounding stations, a guided walk into Wilpena Pound and a night at Monarto Safari Resort with a dawn wildlife safari.
Cesar Piotto, Journey Beyond Executive General Manager Touring, said the opportunity was rare even by outback standards.
“Flooding usually occurs only once every three years, making it remarkable to see water levels surpass those of previous major flood years so soon after the last season,” he said.
The tour is priced from $6,490 per person twin share, with 13 departures available between May and August 2026. Previous flood season tours have sold out quickly, and early bookings are strongly encouraged.
