New research has highlighted the financial risks of checking baggage as Australian travellers face additional charges for overhead cabin luggage on some fares.
A Compare the Market survey of 1,000 Australian travellers found 20.4% had experienced missing luggage while flying. Among those affected, almost 7% said their bags were never returned.
Around 18% recovered their luggage within 24 hours, while 62% waited several days. A further 13% did not receive their bags for at least a week, potentially leaving travellers to cover replacement clothing and toiletries during the delay.
Most affected passengers received no payment from their airline, with 78.5% reporting they were not compensated. Among those who did receive compensation, the median payment was $400.
The survey also found most travellers with missing luggage did not claim through travel insurance, while 17.1% had no travel insurance at all.
The findings come as Jetstar introduces charges for overhead cabin baggage on selected bookings. While the research does not establish that the policy will increase lost luggage, it raises a practical consideration for agents advising clients who may shift more belongings into checked bags to avoid additional cabin charges.
