Spain’s capital has been named the best European destination for solo travellers in the 2026 Solo Travel Index, compiled by travel insurance experts at Quotezone, ranking popular cities across safety, public transport costs, hostel availability, internet speed and tour options.
Madrid has scooped the top spot thanks to the highest number of hostels, affordable public transport and fast internet, alongside a high safety score and vibrant cultural scene.
Helen Rolph, Quotezone travel insurance expert, said solo travel had seen a significant surge in recent years.
“More and more holidaymakers are choosing to travel independently so they can explore the world on their own terms. Madrid offers the best combination of affordable transport, plenty of accommodation options and fast internet access,” Ms Rolph said.
Prague came in second, scoring highly for safety and offering a budget-friendly base with historic attractions and a vibrant social scene. Lisbon placed third, recognised for its nearly 4,000 tours on offer and strong mix of hostels and colourful neighbourhoods. Paris ranked fourth despite a lower safety score, buoyed by its enormous selection of tours and fast connectivity. Reykjavik rounded out the top five as the safest destination on the list, ideal for outdoor lovers despite higher transport costs.
