Japan’s autumn season is being positioned as an alternative to the country’s heavily booked cherry blossom period, with a new campaign highlighting travel between October and December.

Inside Travel has launched its “Only in Japan. Only in Autumn.” campaign, focusing on seasonal colour, regional experiences and opportunities to travel beyond the country’s busiest tourism periods.

Tim Oakes, Inside Travel Australia Managing Director, said autumn provided a longer window for travellers to experience seasonal landscapes across different parts of Japan.

“From Kyoto’s temple gardens to the alpine scenery of Kamikochi and the forests of Tohoku, Japan’s autumn colours stretch across the country for months, making them easier to experience than the famously brief cherry blossom season,” Mr Oakes said.

The campaign highlights destinations including Kyoto, Kanazawa, Kamikochi and Tohoku, where travellers can experience the changing maple and ginkgo foliage alongside food, onsen and cultural activities.

Tohoku experiences include walking through Oirase Gorge, cycling through forest areas and staying in traditional hot spring towns.

Travellers booking an eligible tailor-made holiday during the campaign can receive a complimentary experience valued at up to $750. Options include meeting a geisha in Kyoto or Kanazawa, joining a local food tour or exploring with an Insider guide.

Inside Travel is also offering $2,000 off selected small group tour places when two travellers book together. Both offers are subject to availability and conditions.

The campaign runs until September 30.
