It’s one of the most anticipated airline routes in world aviation with ‘Project Sunrise’ set to directly link Australia with long-haul destinations like New York and London.

The project is set to launch in 2027 using a specially-modified fleet of Airbus A350-1000ULR jets.

The aircraft have extra large fuel tanks to make the non-stop journey possible, linking Sydney and the two famous cities in up to 20 hours.

Ahead of the launch, Qantas pilots will be flying much closer to home with a three-hour trip to Auckland giving them practice on and familiarisation with the new planes.

The new A350 is due to arrive in Australia sometime next year to begin preparations for the historic direct flights.

Media have already had a glimpse of what the interior of the new planes will look like, with six first-class suites, 52 business class suites and new-look premium economy seats with extra legroom.
