Following Valentine’s Day, Tourism and Events Queensland reflected on a campaign that positioned the state’s most romantic escapes as the perfect “match” for Australians seeking connection and memorable experiences.

Tapping into new research and real-life love stories, the campaign aligned the qualities Australians value in partners—loyalty, dependability and a sense of adventure—with the distinct personalities of Queensland’s most iconic destinations.

From tropical islands to outback horizons, Queensland’s destinations were framed as ideal partners, each with their own unique charm.

The jewel of the coast, the Whitsundays, was showcased as the ultimate romantic lead, renowned for grand gestures, turquoise waters and the world-famous Heart Reef. With snorkeling, secluded beaches and stargazing experiences, it resonated strongly with Gen Z romantics and families seeking unforgettable moments.

For couples who preferred a more relaxed connection, the Sunshine Coast offered low-key adventure paired with thoughtful indulgence. Wellness retreats, coastal walks, boutique shopping and alfresco dining positioned it as ideal for easy-going travellers who valued meaningful experiences over high-adrenaline thrills.

Elsewhere, Queensland’s diversity was showcased

  • The Southern Great Barrier Reef appealed to Baby Boomers and women seeking scenic road trips, beachside relaxation and gentle water adventures.
  • Townsville delivered nature-led romance with rainforest walks and island escapes.
  • Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef combined cultural discovery, Indigenous storytelling and reef exploration.
  • The Granite Belt catered to food and wine lovers with cellar doors, regional markets and scenic country drives.
  • Outback Queensland promised wide-open skies, road trips and live music for fun-loving travellers.
  • Urban energy flowed through Brisbane and the Gold Coast, where dining, sport and theme park adventures met beachside glamour.
  • The Fraser Coast offered tranquil beauty, waterfalls and stargazing for those drawn to calm, nature-based escapes.

Insights from a survey conducted by YouGov revealed striking parallels between romantic preferences and travel choices.

Australians said they valued loyalty (46%), caring (45%) and dependability (32%) most in a partner—traits mirrored in destinations that offered reliable sunshine, welcoming communities and meaningful experiences.

Nearly half (48%) were drawn to someone with a “big heart,” while 30% favoured low-key adventure and 26% sought a love of nature. Outdoor settings emerged as the clear favourite for dates, with 64% of respondents preferring experiences in nature.

When it came to ideal outings, road trips (33%) topped the list, followed by dinner and drinks (32%) and hiking or outdoor adventures (25%). Rainforest walks, swimming in waterfalls, markets and beach outings also ranked highly—activities Queensland delivered in abundance.

Generational differences also emerged:

  • Baby Boomers prioritised ego-free hearts and relaxed adventure.
  • Millennials and Gen Z were more likely to favour food and wine fluency, confidence and playful competition.

The campaign was brought to life through testimonials from couples who found lasting connections in Queensland.

Asher and Julie Telford credited the Whitsundays for deepening their bond amid its postcard-perfect landscapes. Meanwhile, Ali and Xochi shared how a transformative escape to the Sunshine Coast turned a simple holiday into a lifelong commitment.

By drawing parallels between relationship ideals and destination personalities, Queensland positioned itself as Australia’s ultimate Valentine’s matchmaker.

Whether travellers sought adventure, indulgence, culture or calm, the state showcased experiences that aligned with what Australians valued most: connection, nature and shared moments.

This Valentine’s Day, Queensland did more than promote a getaway, it delivered a compelling love story.
