With European summer holidays on the horizon, two new reports are sounding the alarm for Aussie travellers: scams and theft are still rife overseas, and far too many Aussies are travelling unprepared.

TravelInsurance.com.au’s latest research reveals that 1 in 3 Australians (35%) don’t bother to research local scams before heading overseas, relying on instinct or luck instead.

When it comes to Europe specifically, PassportCard’s Europe Baggage Claim Report shows nearly half of Aussies (49%) are unaware of the top theft hotspots, even as more than 1 in 3 (38%) travel with up to $5,000 worth of gear in their luggage.

“While travel insurance can cover certain scam-related losses, like card fraud or stolen items, it won’t protect you if you’re tricked into handing over cash or paying for dodgy tours,” warns TravelInsurance.com.au CEO Shaun McGowan. “That’s why proper research is your best defence.”

The generational divide in scam awareness is stark: Gen Z lead the way, with 36% always checking for common scams before a trip, while 26% of Baby Boomers still trust their instincts alone, and 18% don’t even know scam research is something they should be doing.

Meanwhile, PassportCard’s CEO Peter Klemt says the risk of petty theft in Europe is also overlooked. Italy, France, and the UK top the list of riskiest countries for Aussie travellers, with pickpockets and bag snatchers capitalising on distracted tourists.

And while it might seem odd, nearly 1 in 4 Australians would consider insuring a viral Labubu bag charm before heading overseas – showing just how attached we are to what we pack.

“It might seem silly to insure a toy, but Labubus are selling for up to $1,000 and people are emotionally invested in what’s in their bags,” says Klemt. “Yet despite this, 55% of Aussies admit they wouldn’t recognise a pickpocket in action.”

Both reports highlight the need for proper research and the right insurance – not just for your tech gadgets or that sentimental ring, but for the simple peace of mind that comes with being prepared. TravelInsurance.com.au suggests checking Smartraveller, joining travel forums and watching real-world scam videos before you go. And for those heading to Europe, PassportCard’s instant payout option for stolen cash or delayed bags means you won’t be left stranded.

As the high season approaches, it’s clear that travel agents have a crucial role to play. Equipping clients with the right insights – from Smartraveller alerts and travel forum updates to insurance options like PassportCard’s instant payouts – can help travellers feel secure and informed. Whether it’s the risk of losing valuable tech, sentimental keepsakes, or a viral Labubu, preparing your clients with the right knowledge and cover can make all the difference.
