Air India will significantly increase capacity between Sydney and Delhi, adding four weekly flights and around 170,000 seats to the route each year.

From 5 December 2026, the airline will increase its year-round service from seven to 11 flights a week, giving travellers greater choice between Australia and India and improving onward connections through Delhi to the UK and Europe.

The expansion comes as Air India marks 70 years of flying between Sydney and India.

The carrier will also introduce its larger Boeing 777-300ER on selected Sydney–Delhi services from 5 December. The aircraft will replace the Boeing 787-8 currently operating the route on those frequencies.

From 1 January 2027, Air India plans to operate the Boeing 777-300ER across all its Sydney services.

The additional flights represent a capacity increase of more than 50 per cent and reflect continued growth in travel between Australia and India.
India is one of Australia’s most important inbound tourism markets, while the route also serves Australians visiting friends and relatives, business travellers and holidaymakers travelling throughout India.

The expanded schedule will provide more options for passengers connecting through Air India’s Delhi hub to destinations across India, Europe and the UK.

Sydney Airport said the year-round increase would give passengers more choice while strengthening connections between Australia and key international markets.

The announcement follows Air India’s separate expansion in Melbourne, where its Delhi service will increase from seven to 11 flights a week from late October.

Air India is undergoing a wider transformation of its international operation, including new aircraft, refurbished cabins and improvements to its onboard and airport services.

Tickets for the additional Sydney–Delhi services are available through Air India and travel agents.
