A new industry-leading toolkit has been launched to support non-First Nations tourism businesses in building respectful and authentic relationships with First Nations people and communities.
The Connecting to Culture Toolkit is a practical, easy-to-use online resource designed to help businesses across the tourism sector navigate their engagement journey in a culturally appropriate and meaningful way.
The Connecting to Culture Toolkit was developed by the Australian Tourism Industry Council (ATIC) along with the ATIC First Nations Reference Group which included representatives from across Australia.
“This is more than a guide – it’s a tool for action,” said Chris Porter, Victoria Tourism Industry Council Acting Chief Executive.
“The Connecting to Culture Toolkit simplifies what can often feel like a complex space and offers a respectful entry point for tourism operators looking to make a genuine impact.”
Through a short questionnaire, businesses can reflect on their current level of engagement and receive tailored guidance, insights and access to a curated library of community-endorsed resources.
Key benefits of the Toolkit include:
# A clear understanding of how the business currently connects with First Nations people and culture
# Actionable steps to deepen engagement
# Trusted resources to guide culturally appropriate practice
# Stronger, more authentic relationships with First Nations communities
“The tourism industry has an important role to play in reconciliation and cultural awareness,” Mr Porter said.
“This toolkit gives businesses the tools they need to step forward with confidence and respect.”
