Virgin Australia had to cancel at least 12 flights and delayed several others as intense weather conditions swept through Sydney and Newcastle.

“The safety of our guests and crew is our top priority,” the airline said, noting that their meteorologists were closely monitoring the evolving storm.

The weather system – technically referred to as a “bombogenesis” – triggered warnings of rainfall of up to 200mm and wind gusts of up to 125km/h across Sydney and much of the NSW coastline during the week.

Flight routes linking Sydney with Brisbane, Canberra and Melbourne are expected to be among the most disrupted.

Sydney Airport confirmed it was keeping a close eye on the situation, advising passengers to check flight statuses directly with their airlines.

Qantas also anticipates some cancellations, reassuring customers they’ll be notified of any changes and reiterating that safety remains paramount.

Virgin Australia issued an early warning, flagging likely disruption to its Sydney and Newcastle schedules.

Commuters on the ground aren’t being spared either. Sydney Trains and NSW TrainLink warned that the storm may cause delays across the rail network.

“Please take extra care and plan ahead if you’re travelling,” transport authorities posted on X.
