Mike Thompson, a well-known figure in the Australian travel industry, has been recognised with the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the King’s Birthday Honours List for his outstanding service to travel and the arts.

Thompson, who served as Chairman of the Australian Travel Industry Association (ATIA) from 2009 to 2018, and as a Director before that, played a pivotal role in enhancing the Association’s national presence and strengthening advocacy for travel businesses during a period of significant change. His contributions were further acknowledged in 2019 when he was awarded life membership of ATIA.

Over his distinguished career, Thompson held senior roles including CEO of Travelscene American Express, General Manager Partnerships at Helloworld Travel, and Head of Supplier Relations at American Express. He also contributed to the Travel Compensation Fund, supporting consumer protection and financial stability in the industry.

Beyond travel, Thompson has been a dedicated supporter of the arts, championing organisations such as the Sydney Youth Orchestra, Brandenburg Orchestra, Australian Chamber Orchestra, Bell Shakespeare Company, Belvoir Theatre, Sydney Dance Company, and Bangarra Dance Company.

In a statement, Mike Thompson OAM (pictured receiving his Life Member award from then Chair Tom Manwaring) said:

“I’m honoured to be recognised in the King’s Honours List. This was entirely unexpected and I’m grateful. Travel and the Arts are passions that have shaped my life. To be acknowledged is appreciated.”

“Mike Thompson’s impact on our industry cannot be overstated,” said ATIA CEO Dean Long. “He was a fearless advocate for independent agency owners, ensuring their voices were heard at the highest levels. His leadership and deep respect for the role of travel businesses in connecting people and communities make this recognition thoroughly deserved.”

“Mike’s legacy reflects the very best of the Australian travel industry, marked by national advocacy, integrity and an unwavering commitment to supporting Australian culture,” Long added.
