While Sydney’s Vivid festival continues to draw crowds with its winter light shows, the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) is reminding Aussies that when it comes to dazzling displays, Hong Kong has it on tap — every single night.

This week, HKTB brought together a group of trade partners, media and staff at Cruise Bar in Sydney to toast the magic of Vivid – but also to shine a light on Hong Kong’s own nightly spectacle, A Symphony of Lights.

As Karen Macmillan, HKTB Director for Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific, put it: “The Vivid lights are pretty good, but Hong Kong hosts the Symphony of Lights every day.”

And there’s never been a better time to see it. Aussies are falling in love with Hong Kong all over again, with the city reporting a 38% year-on-year jump in Australian arrivals.

HKTB’s latest figures show the strong momentum from 2024 is continuing well into 2025, fuelled by blockbuster events, new attractions and more flights.

One major draw has been Hong Kong’s ‘Super March’ — a huge month of events including LIV Golf, Art Basel and the iconic Hong Kong Sevens, which made its debut at the newly opened Kai Tak Sports Park.

Looking ahead, Hong Kong Disneyland will celebrate its 20th anniversary in September and the beloved Wine & Dine Festival returns in October.

But A Symphony of Lights remains the city’s most consistent crowd-pleaser. Every night at 8pm, Victoria Harbour becomes the stage for the world’s largest permanent light and sound show, with more than 40 buildings lighting up in synchronised harmony to music and narration (available via the HKTB mobile app).

Best viewed from Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade, Golden Bauhinia Square or aboard a harbour cruise, it’s a mesmerising way to experience the energy of the city.

Despite demand temporarily outpacing direct flight capacity, airlines are stepping up. Cathay Pacific and Qantas both operate daily services from Australia and from June 21, Hong Kong Airlines will add another daily Sydney service — giving travellers even more ways to reconnect with the city.

“Hong Kong is back in a big way,” said Macmillan. “From world-class events to incredible new infrastructure, Aussies are clearly loving the energy, flavour and spirit of the city once again.”

And yes — the lights are always on.
