Global eSIM provider Holafly has identified the best international alternatives to some of the world’s most famous destinations.

Ghent in Belgium (above) has been named the leading international alternative to Venice in the Travel Dupe Index that compared destinations on similarity, cost, visitor pressure, accessibility and online interest.

The index ranked 10 alternatives to popular tourism destinations, with each substitute required to be located in a different country from the place it was compared to.

Ghent topped the list for its canals, historic architecture and relative value, while Banff in Canada ranked second as an alternative to Aspen in the United States.

Jeonju in South Korea placed third as a substitute for Kyoto, followed by Budva in Montenegro for Ibiza and Cascais in Portugal for Saint-Tropez.

Other pairings included Lake Ohrid in North Macedonia as an alternative to Lake Como, Las Terrenas in the Dominican Republic for Tulum and Menton in France for the Amalfi Coast.

Ciudad Perdida in Colombia was compared with Machu Picchu, while Siargao in the Philippines rounded out the top 10 as an alternative to Bali.

The ranking gave equal weighting of 25% to visual and cultural similarity and accommodation savings, with over tourism contrast accounting for 20%. Accessibility and social momentum each contributed 15%.

The results reflect growing interest in destinations that can offer comparable experiences while potentially reducing costs and exposure to heavily visited tourism centres.
