Following Uniworld’s celebrations of its 50th anniversary, the boutique river cruise specialist has outlined its next phase of growth for the Australian and New Zealand market, focusing on fleet expansion, destination breadth and longer, more immersive journeys.

At a recent media lunch in Sydney, Uniworld managing director Australia and New Zealand Alice Ager said forward bookings for 2026 are tracking strongly, with demand for extended itineraries increasing faster than expected.

“People are taking more time for travel again,” Ager said. “We’re seeing strong traction on 14 nights plus departures, and that’s something agents should be discussing with clients early in the planning process.”

Destination demand insights also featured prominently. Egypt continues to build as a key performer, both as a standalone itinerary and as a stopover en route to Europe.

India is also gaining momentum, with growing interest in river cruising on the Ganges following Uniworld’s first hosted Australian media visit.

While the launch of the S.S. Emilie anchors Uniworld’s anniversary year, attention is already turning to 2027, which will see significant fleet expansion.

Four new ships will join the fleet, including three Super Ships, the S.S. Audrey, S.S. Marlene and S.S. São Rafael, along with the expedition vessel Aqua Blu, operating in Singapore and Indonesian waters.

The additions represent an increase in capacity of around 17 per cent between 2026 and 2027, a substantial step for a brand that has traditionally grown at a measured pace.

Ager said the additional capacity will give agents greater flexibility without compromising Uniworld’s boutique positioning.

“More ships mean more choice, but the experience remains very much Uniworld,” she said.

Uniworld CEO Ellen Bettridge said the company remains committed to maintaining its distinctive style and onboard atmosphere despite fleet growth. “You will never step on a Uniworld ship and feel like you could be anywhere,” she said. “Each ship has its own story and personality.”

Bettridge also confirmed that Uniworld’s transition to private equity ownership has enabled increased investment in technology, data and distribution tools, designed to simplify transactions for travel advisors and improve the customer experience.

Looking ahead, Uniworld’s expanded 2027 itinerary program includes refreshed Rhine and Danube sailings, a limited edition European Gems voyage from Amsterdam to Vienna and Asia-focused departures that extend the brand beyond traditional European river cruising.

Despite increasing competition in the river cruise sector, Bettridge said Uniworld will continue to prioritise lower passenger numbers, high staff to guest ratios and immersive local experiences.

“We’re not chasing volume,” she said. “We’re focused on creating meaningful journeys that resonate long after the trip is over.”

As Uniworld enters its next 50 years, the brand’s strategy remains firmly centred on longer journeys, deeper destination engagement and continued investment in its Super Ship fleet.
