Marriott International has signed an agreement to bring Le Méridien to Lindeman Island in Queensland’s Whitsunday Islands, with the resort expected to open in late 2027 following a $60 million renovation.
Le Méridien Lindeman Island Resort and Spa will mark Marriott International’s first property in the Whitsundays, occupying a 70-hectare parcel of land with private beach frontage just 20 minutes by boat from Hamilton Island Airport.
The resort closed in 2012 and has been acquired by Singapore-based Well Smart Group, which is undertaking the full renovation.
Richard Crawford, Marriott International Vice President Hotel Development for Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific, said the signing was a landmark moment for the destination.
“While the Whitsunday Islands has been a much-loved destination for Australian travellers since the 1980s, visitation from international markets has been inhibited by a limited offering of international branded resorts,” Mr Crawford said.
“We are excited about the potential for Marriott’s leading distribution platforms and Marriott Bonvoy loyalty programme to elevate the global profile of this remarkable destination.”
The renovated resort is expected to feature 200 guest rooms and nine suites, two restaurants, a lobby lounge and bar, resort pool, Explore Spa by Le Méridien, tennis courts, Kids Club and a recreational activities centre offering water sports, archery and indoor golf.
Jack Jia, Well Smart Group Director, said securing Le Méridien was a defining moment for the project.
“This is a destination with a proud history and together with La Vie Hotels and Resorts and the Marriott Bonvoy platform behind us, we are confident Lindeman Island will reclaim its place as one of Australia’s most iconic resort experiences,” Mr Jia said.
The resort will be operated by La Vie Hotels and Resorts, marking Marriott’s first collaboration with the independent hotel management company.
