Sound the trumpets and roll out the red carpet. The overwater bungalows, glassy lagoons and palm-fringed motu of The Islands of Tahiti will soon be just one nonstop flight from home.
From December 15, Air Tahiti Nui will fly direct between Sydney and Papeete – and Australia’s love affair with the South Pacific’s most romantic destination is about to get a whole lot easier.
One flight. No more detours.
Until now, reaching The Islands of Tahiti from Australia meant a short layover in Auckland made the journey just a little more tedious. That changes this summer.
Air Tahiti Nui’s new twice-weekly service connects Sydney’s Kingsford Smith Airport directly with Papeete in around eight hours – and the timing is the clever part.
Flights depart Sydney in the evening, so you cross the Pacific while you sleep and touch down in Tahiti just after sunrise, refreshed and ready.
Better still, you arrive in time to connect with morning island-hopper flights to Moorea, Bora Bora, Rangiroa and the rest of French Polynesia’s 118 islands. You’ll be sipping something cold over a turquoise lagoon before your friends back home have finished their morning coffee.
And you don’t have to live in Sydney to make the most of it. Through Air Tahiti Nui’s interline partnerships, travellers from Melbourne, Brisbane and beyond will be able to connect seamlessly onto the new service via Sydney.
The journey is part of the holiday
Step aboard Air Tahiti Nui’s Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner – the manureva, or “travel bird” – and the holiday begins the moment you sit down.
The cabin is steeped in Polynesian warmth: fresh tiare flowers, genuine smiles and the gentle hum of island music. Choose from three cabins – Moana Economy, Mānava Premium and the lie-flat luxury of Poerava Business – and settle in.
It’s an all-inclusive experience, too. Meals, drinks, generous baggage allowance, in-flight entertainment and a comfort kit all come standard, with no nickel-and-diming along the way.
Little wonder Air Tahiti Nui is a multi-award-winning carrier, repeatedly named among the best airlines in the South Pacific.
A different kind of island escape
The Islands of Tahiti aren’t just another beach holiday, they’re a feeling. Picture mornings spent snorkelling above coral gardens alive with rays and reef sharks, lazy afternoons in an overwater bungalow with a glass floor framing the lagoon, and evenings under a blanket of stars with a plate of fresh poisson cru and the rhythm of drums in the distance.
Each island has its own personality. Bora Bora dazzles with its emerald peak and impossibly blue lagoon. Moorea, just a short hop from Papeete, serves up jagged mountains, pineapple plantations and humpback whales in season. The Tuamotu atolls of Rangiroa and Fakarava are a diver’s dream, while Tahiti itself rewards the curious with black-sand beaches, lush waterfalls, vibrant markets and the legendary surf break of Teahupo’o.
Then there’s the culture : among the most welcoming on Earth. From dance and tattoo artistry to the famous Tahitian black pearls and fragrant monoi oil, this is a destination that gets under your skin and stays there. Best of all, Australian passport holders can visit visa-free for up to 90 days.
