An eight-night voyage aboard Crystal Serenity from Marseille to Civitavecchia was my first onboard experience of the Crystal brand.
What stood out to me most was not necessarily the accommodation, dining or itinerary, but how the overall experience felt.
Luxury is very much in the eye of the beholder. For some travellers, it is butler service, premium beverages and fine dining.
For others, it is space, comfort and simplicity. My time aboard Crystal Serenity reinforced that there is no single definition of luxury.
My first impression came before I even stepped onboard. Embarkation in Marseille was remarkably smooth. Bags were collected at the terminal, check-in took only a few minutes and security was equally efficient.
Before long I was enjoying lunch in Marketplace and settling into my Ocean View stateroom (left) on the Promenade Deck.
The amount of space onboard quickly became one of the things I appreciated most. Crystal Serenity never felt crowded.
Public spaces were comfortable, finding a quiet place to sit was easy and there was a sense of calm throughout the ship. Even the lifts were empty when the doors opened on most occasions!
Having heard people talk about space-to-guest ratios for years, I finally understood why experienced luxury cruisers place so much value on them.
Another aspect I appreciated was the onboard atmosphere. Crystal retains some traditional luxury cruise touches, including butler service, formal occasions such as the Captain’s Welcome and themed events like White Night.
Guests who enjoy dressing up certainly have opportunities to do so.
However, outside these occasions I found the atmosphere far more relaxed than many people might expect. The overall feeling was elegant, comfortable and welcoming rather than formal or intimidating.
Dining was generally a highlight of the voyage. Marketplace became a favourite casual venue, offering a wide variety of options and making it easy to find something appealing regardless of taste.
The specialty restaurants were particularly impressive. Osteria d’Ovidio delivered a memorable dining experience, while Umi Uma was outstanding and one of my favourite meals of the voyage.
One area that initially fell short of expectations involved the handling of special meals. One of my travelling companions is vegan and even though the information had been provided before sailing, the first evening in the main dining room suggested it had not flowed through to the relevant teams.
To Crystal’s credit, the response once the issue was raised was immediate.
The Executive Chef personally contacted the guest to discuss their requirements and subsequent dining experiences improved significantly.
The experience reinforced an important observation for me. In a luxury environment, the goal should be to make the handling of these requirements almost invisible to the guest.
Once the issue was identified, Crystal handled it well, although I felt the opportunity was there to be proactive rather than reactive.
Some of the onboard experiences I enjoyed most were also among the simplest.
Afternoon tea in Palm Court (left) became a welcome discovery after returning from a day ashore. The Bistro for an afternoon coffee & Crystal Cove for a pre- or post-dinner drink with friends became favourites and they make an excellent Caipiroska.
I also developed an appreciation for Crystal’s self-service guest laundries. While it may not be the first feature people associate with luxury cruising, some travellers appreciate the flexibility of being able to do a load of washing whenever it suits them.
The itinerary was another strength of the voyage. Girona, Barcelona, Monaco during Grand Prix weekend, Portofino and Livorno all offered very different experiences, but it was the Italian Riviera that left one of the strongest impressions.
Travelling by boat between Portofino, Sestri Levante and Santa Margherita provided a reminder that sometimes the most memorable travel experiences are not the most famous attractions, but the atmosphere of a destination and the feeling it leaves behind.
Reflecting on the voyage, the word that keeps coming to mind is balance. Crystal successfully blends traditional luxury elements with a relaxed onboard atmosphere that allows guests to experience the cruise in their own way.
There are opportunities to dress up, but no pressure to do so. There is attentive service, but without feeling intrusive. There is fine dining, but also casual dining done well.
Most importantly, Crystal Serenity felt like a comfortable place to spend eight nights exploring the Mediterranean.
Several days after the cruise I realise the thing I miss most is not a particular restaurant, destination or onboard feature. Besides spending time with friends, it is the overall feeling of being onboard.
For me, that may be the strongest endorsement of all.
