Japan remains one of Australia’s favourite international destinations, with Destination Japan recording significant growth in traveller demand over the past financial year.
Data from July 1, 2025, to June 30, 2026, shows gross bookings increased 47% year-on-year, while room nights also grew 47%.
The strongest travel periods remained Japan’s spring season, with February and March recording the highest room-night volumes of the year.
However, autumn is emerging as a major drawcard, with November performing almost on par with spring peaks, reflecting growing interest in Japan’s seasonal experiences beyond cherry blossom season.
Australians are also planning further ahead, with average booking lead times increasing 9% year-on-year, demonstrating strong confidence in Japan as a holiday destination.
“Our latest results show Australians continue to choose Japan in increasing numbers, while also exploring new reasons to visit throughout the year,” said Jo Rendall, Business Leader at Infinity.
“We’re seeing strong demand not only for the traditional cherry blossom period, but also for autumn travel, regional experiences and longer-term trip planning.”
Additional results showed net bookings increased 106% year-on-year, and total margin grew 33%, reflecting strong consumer demand and improved booking performance.
The findings reinforce Japan’s growing appeal as a year-round destination for Australian travellers, supported by its diverse cultural, culinary and seasonal experiences.
