Travellers hoping to tick the Northern Lights off their bucket list may not get a better chance for years.
Scientists say Earth is experiencing heightened solar activity, producing some of the strongest aurora displays seen in more than a decade.
The next solar peak is not expected until the mid 2030s, so this autumn and winter offer an excellent window.
Above the Arctic Circle, long nights and dark skies create ideal viewing conditions and a cruise adds open views of the night sky from remote destinations.
“A cruise is an especially rewarding way to experience the phenomenon, with wide-open views of the dark night sky and little interference from city lights,” said Adam Burgasser, professor of astronomy and astrophysics at the University of California San Diego.
Extended Time in Arctic Norway
Holland America Line is sailing a series of Arctic Journey and Northern Lights voyages aboard Rotterdam and Nieuw Statendam in October and November, with extended stays in Tromsø and Alta of up to 36 and 30 hours.
Guests can join guided excursions including a mountaintop aurora camp in Alta and a fjord boat search in Tromsø, both with hot drinks included.
Onboard, guests can sign up for wake up calls so they never miss a sighting at sea.
