Carnival Corporation has set a new target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions intensity by 25% by 2029, bringing forward its timetable after reaching its previous 2030 goal five years early.
The company reduced GHG emissions intensity by 20% in 2025 compared with its 2019 baseline. It said improvements in fuel efficiency are also expected to generate around $650 million in savings during 2026 compared with 2019 levels.
Since 2008, Carnival Corporation has reduced emissions intensity by 44%, with its decarbonisation strategy focused on operational improvements, energy efficiency measures and lower GHG power generation.
Josh Weinstein, Carnival Corporation CEO, said reaching the previous target early would not slow further investment.
“Our new 2029 target ensures we’re continuing to improve every part of the equation, from using less fuel to advancing the tools, technologies and infrastructure that will help us lower emissions even further over time,” Mr Weinstein said.
Measures being introduced across the fleet include voyage optimisation, energy management systems, waste heat recovery and air lubrication technology designed to reduce propulsion energy requirements.
Seven new ships scheduled to enter service through 2033 are expected to be more than 20% more efficient per passenger than current vessels.
Carnival Corporation is also expanding the use of LNG powered ships, shore power, biofuels and battery storage. Shore power capability has reached 74% of the fleet, with the company targeting 80% by 2030.
The group operates cruise brands including Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Cunard, Holland America Line and Seabourn.
