Newcastle in New South Wales has recorded high satisfaction among cruise passengers, with new survey results showing visitors rated their overall experience 4.5 out of five during the 2025–26 season.
The Cruise Newcastle Passenger Survey found almost 80% of passengers would return to the city and surrounding areas. International travellers represented 62% of respondents.
Welcome Volunteers and Visitor Information services received the highest ratings among destination touchpoints, highlighting the role local volunteers play in helping passengers navigate the city and surrounding region.
Glenn Caldwell, Destination Sydney Surrounds North General Manager, said the results showed passengers valued Newcastle’s accessibility, local services and regional experiences.
“Passenger feedback from the 2025–26 season confirms that Newcastle is an exceptional cruise destination with a welcoming community, walkable city centre and diverse regional experiences,” Mr Caldwell said.
The findings come as the Newcastle Tourism Industry Group’s Cruise Welcome Volunteer Program receives funding through the Port Authority of NSW Community Grants program.
The funding will support wayfinding services and the development of new visitor maps ahead of the next cruise season.
Martin Bidgood, Port Authority of NSW General Manager Cruise, said the survey demonstrated the contribution local volunteers make to the passenger experience.
“The Cruise Welcome Volunteers play a vital role in providing passengers with information to make the most of their visit to our region and create genuine connections that passengers remember long after they leave,” Mr Bidgood said.
Cruise Newcastle is also continuing work under the Newcastle Cruise Memorandum of Understanding, which brings together Port Authority of NSW, Destination Sydney Surrounds North, the Newcastle Tourism Industry Group and seven local councils.
The partnership aims to improve cruise visitor experiences and increase the economic benefits of cruise tourism across Newcastle, the Hunter and Central Coast.
