Luxury travel in the United States is increasingly being defined by privacy, access and highly personalised experiences rather than accommodation alone.

New offerings range from after-hours museum visits and private rail journeys to guided wilderness trips and small-scale culinary experiences.

Brand USA is highlighting the shift at IMM LUX events in Las Vegas and London, showcasing experiences designed for travellers seeking more individual access to destinations, culture, food, nature, sport and wellness.

Fred Dixon, Brand USA President and CEO, said the trend reflected growing interest in experiences that create a stronger connection with the places being visited.

“Across the USA, luxury is increasingly defined not only by where travellers stay, but by the access, personalisation and sense of place they experience along the way,” Mr Dixon said.

In New York, the Museum of Modern Art offers private tours before or after public opening hours, while San Francisco’s Alcatraz Behind the Scenes experience takes limited groups into areas not included on the standard visitor route.

Food and wine experiences are also becoming more intimate. Kira Omakase in New Orleans operates with just six seats, while private winery experiences in Napa Valley can include library tastings and access to estates not normally open to general visitors.

For travellers looking to build a trip around accommodation, options range from The Point in New York’s Adirondacks, a former Rockefeller family retreat with just 11 guest accommodations, to The Ranch at Rock Creek in Montana and Kona Village on Hawaii Island.

The trend extends into outdoor touring, with private guides offering tailored itineraries through Utah’s national parks, Navajo-led trips to the Grand Canyon’s East Rim and customised boat journeys around Maine’s Casco Bay.

Rail is also emerging as another premium way to explore the country ahead of the 200th anniversary of American rail in 2027.

Halloway Private Rail Cars attaches restored private carriages to scheduled Amtrak services, while Canyon Spirit operates multi-day journeys through Colorado and Utah.

High-end sporting access includes VIP hospitality at the Masters golf tournament, Kentucky Derby and US Open, while wellness offerings range from personalised programs at Golden Door in California to structured retreats at The Ranch Hudson Valley and Canyon Ranch.

Brand USA said the growing range of experiences reflects a broader move towards trips built around access and personal interests, allowing travellers to explore familiar destinations from a different perspective.
