A new private island destination in The Bahamas has moved into its next stage of development, with construction underway ahead of a planned 2028 opening.
Sandy Cay, located next to Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, is being developed for guests of MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys.
The project was first announced in April and is intended to offer a more intimate, luxury focused island experience alongside the existing Ocean Cay destination.
The ground breaking ceremony brought together representatives from MSC Group’s Cruise Division, Bahamian government officials and project stakeholders, including Pierfrancesco Vago, MSC Group Cruise Division Executive Chairman, and Philip Davis, Prime Minister of The Bahamas.
Plans for Sandy Cay centre on wellness, relaxation and access to the island’s natural surroundings, with dining experiences, private retreats and dedicated spaces for guests to unwind.
The development forms part of the cruise division’s broader investment in The Bahamas, with further upgrades also planned for Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve.
Those additions will include new dining venues, separate beach concepts for families and adults, expanded relaxation areas and new experiences linked to marine conservation.
Once Sandy Cay opens, MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys guests will have access to two private island destinations in The Bahamas, each offering a different style of shore experience.
