Aurora Expeditions’ newest expedition vessel, Douglas Mawson, has been recognised on TIME’s World’s Greatest Places 2026 list.
Published annually by TIME, the list highlights destinations and travel experiences shaping the future of tourism through innovation, sustainability and cultural significance.
Launched in November 2025, the Douglas Mawson is the newest purpose-built ship in Aurora Expeditions’ fleet and the third designed specifically for exploration in some of the world’s most remote regions.
Named after legendary Antarctic explorer Sir Douglas Mawson, the vessel combines the intimacy of small-ship expedition travel with modern technology designed to support responsible exploration.
The ship carries just 130 expeditioners in polar regions, or up to 154 guests on global itineraries. Its design includes Ulstein’s distinctive X-BOW hull, which improves stability and reduces fuel consumption while providing a smoother journey through challenging waters such as the Drake Passage.

On board, travellers can enjoy spaces designed to connect them with the surrounding environment, including a two-storey atrium, a panoramic observation lounge, a citizen science centre and expansive outdoor viewing decks.
Dedicated Zodiac embarkation platforms allow guests to quickly access shore landings and wildlife encounters, supporting Aurora’s immersive expedition style.
Katie Malone, Chief Marketing Officer at Aurora Expeditions, said the recognition highlights the growing interest in meaningful exploration.
“Being recognised by TIME as one of the World’s Greatest Places is an honour and reflects the global appetite for responsible exploration. Douglas Mawson was designed as a platform for discovery that brings together adventure, science and sustainable travel in some of the most extraordinary environments on Earth,” Malone said.
The ship joins Aurora Expeditions’ fleet alongside Greg Mortimer and Sylvia Earle as the company celebrates 35 years of expedition travel in 2026.
